Similar to people, numerous conditions respond favorably to rehabilitation, including neurologic diseases (disc disease, FCE), post-operative cases, arthritis, soft tissue injuries and chronic pain.  Basically, any condition that causes weakness, limping, muscle atrophy, stiffness, inflammation or decreased functionality can benefit from rehabilitation therapy.

Home visits are ideal for animals who have trouble with travel (such as difficulty getting in and out of the car, won’t sit still in the car, stressed, car sickness) or are anxious in clinic settings.  The majority of dogs are more relaxed in their home environment allowing for better therapy.

Home visits also allow for a more personalized appointment that allows dedicated one on one time with Dr. O’Neil.  Lastly, home visits  allow us to evaluate your pet’s home environment and make recommendations based on their mobility needs.

Our initial consultation ranges from 60 to 90 minutes, during which, a detailed medical history will be obtained, general physical exam and a thorough orthopedic and neurologic exam will be performed including gait analysis, joint range of motion and muscle mass.  Based on structural abnormalities, strength imbalances and a pain assessment, an individualized plan will be created to meet the goals of you and your pet.

Rehab plans vary based on specific conditions of the pet, as well as their specific needs.  A plan will be created at the initial appointment and is continually reassessed based on how the pet is progressing.

Generally, most conditions respond when formal rehab is performed 1 to 2 times per week for 4 to 8 weeks.  These sessions are about 60 minutes and may include massage, passive range of motion, joint mobilizations, myofascial release, acupuncture, cold laser therapy and exercises for strength and balance.

If the condition being treated is more chronic, such as arthritis or back pain, most clients find that subsequent “maintenance” visits weekly to once a month are integral to maintaining their pet’s condition.

Yes, every pet has home exercises that are tailored to the pet and the owner.  Exercises are given at the initial consultation and are updated at every visit.

For many conditions, rehab can start right away.  Initially, we may begin with passive techniques  to address pain, decrease inflammation and expedite healing.
